Designed by Jamela Alawneh for Melaaura, the Portofino lounge chair is an outdoor seat that occupies its space with the easy authority that only genuine design confidence can produce. Part of the Portofino collection, Melaaura’s most comprehensive outdoor range, it sits at the heart of the collection’s seating family as the piece most fully given over to the pleasure of being outside: lower in profile than the high back lounge chair, more open in posture, and entirely without the formality that dining or occasional seating can impose.

Where the high back lounge chair shelters and encloses, the Portofino lounge chair opens. Its lower, more horizontal profile invites a different quality of rest, limbs extended, posture released, attention given over entirely to the sky above or the company around. It is a chair that understands its purpose without apology and delivers on it without compromise.

The construction follows the logic of the entire Portofino collection: continuous lengths of synthetic cord are hand-wound over a powder-coated aluminium frame in a tight, interlocking pattern that gives the seat and backrest their quietly textured, unified surface. The weave runs continuously across the full form, creating a material coherence that reads as one complete object rather than a seat assembled from separate parts. Its surface shifts with the quality of outdoor light throughout the day, holding depth in morning shade, glowing with warmth in direct afternoon sun, in the way that only a hand-woven, three-dimensional surface can. The cord is engineered to resist UV degradation, moisture, and sustained outdoor use without losing its tension, tone, or structural integrity over time.

The finish throughout is the collection’s signature warm greige;matte, sun-resistant, and possessed of a natural warmth that deepens rather than fades in direct light, with none of the artificiality that lesser synthetic materials betray. The braided crown edge at the top of the backrest introduces a moment of artisanal precision that holds the form together and keeps the hand of the maker present in an otherwise restrained silhouette. Four slender legs lift the frame with easy lightness, keeping the overall profile open and considered from every angle — front, side, and rear.
