Choosing an outdoor dining table

In Southern California an outdoor dining table gets used far more than one in most places: weekday dinners, weekend lunches and larger gatherings for most of the year. That makes the top material and the size the two decisions that matter most.

Choosing the top

Teak is warm and forgiving and weathers to silver-grey unless it is oiled. Ceramic and lava stone tops resist heat, stains and UV, which makes them the low-maintenance choice for a sunny terrace. Powder-coated aluminium is light and easy to move. If the table sits under a pergola or covered patio, almost any of these will last; fully exposed tables do best in ceramic, stone or teak.

Getting the size right

Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person, and at least 36 inches between the table edge and any wall or railing so chairs can pull out. Round tables suit four to six people and smaller patios; rectangular and oval tables suit longer spaces and larger groups.
