Choosing an outdoor umbrella

In a Los Angeles summer, shade decides how many hours a day an outdoor space is actually usable. A well-placed umbrella makes a dining table or a pair of loungers comfortable in the middle of the afternoon, and it is the most flexible form of shade because it can move with the sun.

Center post or cantilever

A center-post umbrella goes through the middle of a dining table or stands on its own base, and is the simplest and most wind-stable option. A cantilever umbrella hangs from a side post, so it can shade a lounge area or a pair of sun loungers without a pole in the way, and most models tilt and rotate to follow the sun. Size and base

As a rule of thumb, the canopy should reach about two feet beyond the edge of the table or seating it covers. Larger canopies need heavier bases or in-ground mounts, especially on exposed terraces and rooftops. Ask us about the right base for your surface before ordering.
