Hos Deckchair and Stool Set

Kengo Kuma is one of the most significant architects working today, and Hos carries his preoccupations directly into a piece of furniture. The iroko wood structure is assembled through the interlocking of carved components — no nails, no screws — reviving the joinery of traditional Japanese architecture at furniture scale.

The fabric is where the idea becomes explicit. “I challenged myself to express natural phenomena and elements through the patterns,” Kuma says. “I am very interested in the idea that rain, ground, or mist can be reduced to a geometric pattern.” The three options are named for those phenomena: Shito-Shito, Sara-Sara and Moya-Moya — Japanese onomatopoeia for different qualities of rain and mist.

It is woven from 100% recycled PET on a manual loom, so the material is both genuinely sustainable and hand-made — an unusual combination, and one that gives the surface a texture no industrial weave achieves.

The set was produced for GANDIABLASCO Edition, the brand’s programme of limited collaborations with architects and designers.
