Tomé Jug

The Tomé jug by Luis Fernández Codeseda for GANDIABLASCO is a Ø9 x 29 cm handcrafted terracotta vessel holding 700 ml. The clay’s natural porosity cools the water by evaporation, and each piece is made by traditional Spanish methods so no two are alike.

“Contemporary craftsmanship has the potential to offer objects that tell a story, that are singular and that carry the imprint of their creator,” says Luis Fernández Codeseda. “In my designs, the artisan process intervenes like a drop of chaos; like the beauty born of imperfection.”

Tomé is his contemporary revision of the botijo, the ancestral Spanish water vessel. The design began with a memory — the precise gesture of drinking from a botijo, which the designer associated with his grandfather — and works outward from that action to the form.

It is made from terracotta, using the clay’s natural porosity to cool water through evaporation. That is not decoration: an unglazed clay vessel left in shade will hold water several degrees below ambient temperature, which is why the botijo survived for centuries in a hot country.

At Ø9 x 29 cm it holds 700 ml. Every piece is handcrafted using traditional Spanish techniques, so the entirely manual process makes each one unique.
