Planter BARRIQUE 101

The Barrique planter by Roda is a handcrafted outdoor accessory that combines natural Iroko wood with polyester or acrylic cord and belt details. Available in three sizes with narrow or wide slats, it offers a wide range of color combinations to suit any outdoor setting.

A Different Kind of Planter

The Barrique planter does not look like most outdoor planters. It borrows its structure from a design language that treats wood as something more than just a material — it becomes part of the visual story. Slats run vertically, held together with cords and belts that add texture and a quiet handcrafted feel. The result is something that sits between functional object and decorative piece, without trying too hard to be either.

Materials and Construction

The structure is built from Iroko, a dense and naturally resilient hardwood that holds up well outdoors. The binding details — available as narrow cord at 3mm or wider 45mm belts — are made from polyester or acrylic, both chosen for their ability to resist the elements without losing their finish. The natural wood tone is left as is, letting the material speak for itself rather than being stained or painted over.

Roda offers the belts and cords in a broad range of colors: solid tones, tone-on-tone combinations, or two contrasting colors pulled from the full catalog. Options run from neutrals like Grey, Sand, and Stone to warmer shades like Tobacco and Clay, and more expressive choices like Mint, Teal, Orange, and Rose. There’s also a recycled version of both the cord and belt for those who want a more considered material choice.

Customization and Scale

Barrique comes in three sizes, with a choice of narrow or wide slats depending on the look you’re after. The smallest size measures approximately 16 inches in diameter and 18 inches in height — compact enough for a terrace corner but substantial enough to hold a proper plant. The slat width changes the overall visual weight of the piece: wider slats feel more grounded and architectural, while narrower ones read as lighter and more refined.

Where It Works Best

This is an outdoor piece, but it doesn’t have to live only in a garden. A covered terrace, a poolside corner, a well-lit loggia — any of these work. And because the color combinations are so varied, it can sit alongside existing outdoor furniture without feeling out of place. It pairs naturally with other pieces from Roda’s outdoor range, especially those that share the same cord and belt detailing found across the collection.

But it also works well on its own. A single Barrique planter in a quiet corner, holding something that grows and changes with the seasons, does exactly what a well-designed accessory should do — adds something without demanding attention.

Built to Last Outdoors

Iroko is not a delicate wood. It has a natural density and oil content that makes it suitable for prolonged outdoor use without the constant maintenance that other woods require. The polyester and acrylic cording is similarly chosen for durability — it won’t fade quickly or lose its structure after a season or two. The Barrique planter is designed to stay outside, look good doing it, and keep doing so for years.
