La Siesta Jug

The botijo — the porous clay water jug of the Spanish countryside — is one of those objects so ordinary it stopped being noticed. Héctor Serrano’s joke, and it is a good one, is to give it the silhouette of a disposable 1.5-litre plastic bottle.

The result reads at a glance as something you would throw away, and on closer inspection is handmade white terracotta that will last decades. It holds 1.2 litres and, like the traditional botijo, the clay’s natural porosity cools the water through slow evaporation.

Each jug is made by artisanal methods, so no two are identical. Two finishes are offered: a natural finish suitable for food-grade use, and a powder-coated version for purely decorative display.

GANDIABLASCO have effectively revived a Spanish design icon here — traditional Mediterranean material and technique, redirected through a contemporary observation about how we drink water now.
