Where to Shop for Outdoor Furniture in Los Angeles: A Showroom Guide

Most of Los Angeles’s luxury outdoor furniture showrooms sit within about a mile of each other in the West Hollywood Design District, along Beverly Boulevard, Robertson Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. If you only have an afternoon, that is where to go: you can walk between several showrooms, sit on the pieces and compare materials side by side.

This guide covers where the showrooms are, what to check when you visit, and how to make the most of a trip to ours.

Where to find outdoor furniture showrooms in Los Angeles

  • West Hollywood Design District (Beverly Blvd, Robertson Blvd, Melrose Ave). The densest cluster for outdoor furniture. On Beverly Boulevard alone you will find Niche Beverly at 8770, Janus et Cie at 8933 and Harbour at 8950, and Gloster has a studio in the district. Most are open to the public; a few work mainly with designers.
  • Pacific Design Center (Melrose Ave and San Vicente Blvd). A large building of showrooms, many of them to the trade only. Worth a visit if you are working with an interior designer who can take you in.
  • Helms Bakery District (Helms Ave, near Culver City). Harbour has a second, larger Los Angeles showroom here at 3240 Helms Ave.

Hours change and some showrooms ask you to book, so it is worth calling ahead, especially on weekends.

What to check when you see outdoor furniture in person

  • Seat height and depth. Outdoor lounge seating is often lower and deeper than indoor. Sit for a few minutes, and try getting up.
  • Cushions. Ask what the foam is. Quick-dry (open-cell) foam drains after rain; standard foam stays wet for days.
  • Fabric. Solution-dyed acrylics and similar performance fabrics hold their colour in Southern California sun. Ask to see a sample that has been outside.
  • Frame material. Teak weathers to silver unless oiled, powder-coated aluminium is light and rust-free, and rope and woven fibres vary a lot in quality. Touch the finish and look at the joints.
  • Weight and wind. On a roof terrace or high-rise balcony, light pieces can move in the wind. Ask about weight and anchoring.
  • Lead time. Many European pieces are made to order. Ask how long the piece you like will take, and whether anything similar is in stock.

Why it is worth seeing outdoor furniture before you buy

Outdoor furniture is hard to judge from photos. Comfort varies more than with indoor pieces, colours look different in daylight, and the difference between a well-made frame and a cheap one is easy to feel and hard to see. It is also a big piece of furniture that you will live with for years, often in full view from inside the house. An hour in a showroom usually saves a return.

Before you go

  • Measure the space and note where the doors, steps and planters are.
  • Take a few photos of the area, and note which way it faces and how much sun it gets.
  • Bring fabric or finish samples from inside the house if you want the outdoor pieces to match.
  • Decide roughly how many people you want to seat, both lounging and at the table.
