Dining Table Size Guide: How Big a Table You Need, Indoors and Out

The most common mistake with a dining table isn’t the style. It’s the size. A table that’s too big makes a dining room feel cramped and leaves no room to pull out chairs. One that’s too small turns every dinner party into an exercise in elbows. This guide gives you the numbers you need to get it right, indoors and out.

Start with the room, not the table

Measure the room (or the terrace) first, then work inward.

• Leave 36 inches between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That’s the minimum for someone to pull out a chair and sit down.
• Leave 42 to 48 inches if people need to walk behind seated guests, or if the table sits next to a kitchen island or doorway.
• Subtract those clearances from the room size. What’s left is the largest table the space can take.

Example: a dining room 12 feet wide (144 inches) with 36 inches on each side leaves 72 inches for the table width. That’s more than enough, since most tables are 36 to 42 inches wide. So the room’s length is what limits you.

Allow 24 inches per person

Each diner needs about 24 inches of table edge to eat comfortably. For armchairs or a more generous feel, allow 28 to 30 inches.

Rectangular dining table sizes

• 60 inches long: seats 4, or 6 at a squeeze
• 72 inches long: seats 6
• 84 inches long: seats 6 to 8
• 96 inches long: seats 8
• 108 to 120 inches long: seats 10
• 120 inches and longer: seats 10 to 12

A rectangular table should be 36 to 42 inches wide. Narrower than 36 inches and there’s no room for serving dishes in the middle. Wider than 42 inches and it becomes hard to talk across.

Round dining table sizes

• 36 to 44 inches across: seats 2 to 4
• 48 inches across: seats 4
• 54 inches across: seats 4 to 5
• 60 inches across: seats 6
• 72 inches across: seats 8

Round tables are more sociable because everyone can see and hear everyone else, and there’s no head of the table. They also suit square rooms and breakfast nooks. Above 72 inches, though, the center becomes hard to reach and people end up too far apart to talk.

Oval and square tables

Oval tables combine the seating of a rectangle with the easier flow of a round table. With no corners, they suit narrow rooms and busy walkways. Ethimo’s Noon oval dining table is a good example. As a rough guide, an oval seats about the same as a rectangle of the same length.

Square tables of 36 to 44 inches seat four in close conversation. Above 60 inches, square tables seat eight but the center is out of reach. Two square tables pushed together are often a better option for a flexible outdoor space.

Height: dining, counter and bar

• Dining height: 28 to 30 inches, with chairs that have a seat height of 17 to 19 inches.
• Counter height: about 36 inches, with stools that have a seat height of 24 to 26 inches. See our counter height tables.

In every case, you want 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the tabletop.

Choosing the chairs

• Check the chair width against the table length. Armchairs are often 22 to 26 inches wide, so fewer of them fit.
• Check the legs and base. A pedestal or table base with no corner legs lets you fit more chairs around a round table.

Outdoor dining: extra things to plan for

Outdoors, the same rules apply, with a few additions.

• Allow more clearance. Terraces often have steps, planters and pool edges. Aim for 42 inches or more around an outdoor table.

• Add a rug. An outdoor rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on every side, so chair legs stay on the rug when pulled out.
