Two-seater left deck module PHILIA 203
The Philia outdoor sofa by Roda, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, combines FSC-certified teak, Batyline support, and hydro-draining cushions into a modular system built for comfort and conviviality on terraces and in gardens.
A Design That Does More Than Look Good
Rodolfo Dordoni designed Philia around a simple but smart idea: the perimeter frame serves double duty as both a structural support for the backrests and a surface you can actually use. It alternates with the seating, so the line between sofa and side table feels intentional, not accidental. The profiles are clean and proportioned without being cold.
The backrests and armrests are lightly padded and recline in three positions. And the armrest can shift roles entirely, functioning as a backrest or headrest depending on how you want to sit. That kind of flexibility is quietly useful.
Materials Built for the Outdoors
The structure is FSC-certified teak, which matters both for sustainability and for how the wood performs over time. Teak is naturally dense and resistant, and here it references the carabottino, the wooden grating found on yacht decks. It gives Philia a nautical undertone without being literal about it. The feet are powder-coated stainless steel in a smoke finish.
The support system uses Batyline, a technical mesh material that handles outdoor conditions well. It comes in several colors, including grey, sand, olive, brown, navy, ginger, and sky. Belt options are also available across a similar palette. Both materials breathe, which matters when you’re sitting outside in warmer months.
Comfort That Holds Up
The seat height sits at roughly 7 and 7/8 inches without cushions, rising to about 13 and 3/4 inches with them. That’s a low, relaxed position, more lounge than upright. The cushions are hydro-draining, meaning they shed water rather than absorbing it, so they recover quickly after rain.
The reclining backrests add to this. Three positions give you enough range to go from a more composed seated posture to something closer to a recline. It’s not a dramatic mechanism, but it works and it adds real variation to how the piece can be used throughout the day.
Where It Belongs
Philia is made for gardens and terraces. The modular format means the system can scale, from a compact sofa configuration to a generous double chaise longue. A coffee table is part of the collection as well. It works as a social setup, the kind you arrange for a group, or as something more private depending on the configuration you choose.
The upholstery range is wide. Fabric collections include Allegro, Dew, Oxford, Loom, Shore, and others, alongside options like Bamboo, Duna, and Riva. There’s enough variety to work with most outdoor palettes without feeling like a forced match.
How It Holds Over Time
Teak ages well outdoors. It weathers to a silver-grey if left untreated, or it can be maintained to keep its warmer tone. Either way, the structure stays sound. The Batyline and belt supports are UV-resistant and built to handle repeated exposure. Roda’s approach with Philia is straightforward: quality materials, considered construction, and a design that doesn’t rely on trends to stay relevant.
