York Large Outdoor Planter

Designed by Jamela Alawneh for Melaaura, the York large outdoor planter is an exercise in architectural conviction,a tall, clean-edged square form in fiber cement that brings discipline, symmetry, and spatial intention to any outdoor environment it inhabits. Where many planters offer decoration, York offers structure. Where others soften a space, York defines it.

Alawneh’s approach to the York is rooted in the understanding that the best large outdoor planters function as landscape architecture as much as horticulture that a planter of this scale and geometry inevitably becomes part of the spatial composition around it, reinforcing sightlines, framing thresholds, and giving order to living things. The York’s square footprint and tall vertical profile are a direct expression of that conviction: clean right angles, a matte surface with just enough texture to catch light, and proportions calibrated to command presence without competing with the planting or architecture around them.

At 65 cm tall and up to 54 cm wide, the York is ideally scaled for high-impact applications. A pair flanking an entrance or doorway creates an immediate sense of arrival and formality. A set of three spaced along a walkway establishes rhythm and axis. A repeated grid across a roof terrace or urban courtyard introduces spatial order with minimal visual noise. The square opening is well-suited to upright planting, banana trees, elephant ears, ornamental palms, clipped shrubs, and formal topiary all sit naturally within York’s geometry, their vertical character amplified by the planter’s own.

Available in two carefully considered matte finishes; Ash, a cool, clean grey that reads as crisply contemporary, and Weathered Cement, a warmer, more tactile tone that evokes aged stone and pairs naturally with both modern minimalism and more classical outdoor settings, the York adapts across a wide range of architectural contexts without ever losing its character. Both finishes develop a soft natural patina over time, deepening the material quality of the piece without degrading its structure.

Constructed from fiber cement, a durable composite of cement, cellulose fibre, and aggregate, the York is engineered for permanence. It does not warp, crack, or fade.
