Alor Large Planter

Designed by Jamela Alawneh for Melaaura, the Alor large planter is a piece defined by expansion rather than elevation, a wide, bowl-form vessel in fiber cement that moves outward across the ground plane, settling into a space with the unhurried authority of something that has always belonged there. Where most large planters reach upward, Alor spreads wide, and in doing so achieves a different and arguably more powerful kind of presence: one that is grounded, generous, and entirely without strain.

Alawneh’s design draws from the long tradition of classical stone vessels,the rounded bowl, the subtle rim, the sense of a form made to receive and hold something of genuine weight but strips that language back to its contemporary essentials. The result is a silhouette that feels simultaneously ancient and entirely modern: no applied ornament, no historicist detail, just clean curved geometry in a material that speaks of permanence and natural character. At 100 cm wide and 62 cm tall, the Alor is imposing in scale without being imposing in manner , it settles into the landscape rather than commanding it, a quality that makes it equally at home in a spare minimalist courtyard and a richly layered Mediterranean garden full of texture and contrast.

The wide, low profile is a deliberate spatial and horticultural choice. It accommodates root systems that wider, shallower-growing plants require, grasses surrounding a small olive tree, moss bases supporting bonsai or topiary forms, multi-species compositions that layer height and texture within a single vessel. The generous diameter gives each plant visual breathing room and allows compositions to read as considered rather than crowded. The low centre of gravity also helps plants connect visually with the space around them rather than sitting above it, integrating the planting into the garden floor rather than isolating it as a specimen on a plinth.

Available in three carefully considered matte finishes; Ash, a clean cool neutral; Oyster, a softer, warmer tone with a delicate mineral quality; and Maya, a richer earth-inflected hue that sits naturally within Mediterranean, naturalistic, and warm contemporary palettes, the Alor is designed to read as material rather than decorative. Each finish develops a natural patina over time that deepens the character of the piece without compromising its structural integrity, and each is chosen to complement rather than compete with the planting and architecture around it.

Constructed from fiber cement, the Alor is built for long-term outdoor performance. Its thick walls insulate roots against temperature extremes, making it well suited to high sun exposure and seasonally demanding climates. Its substantial weight provides inherent stability in exposed or high-traffic settings without the need for additional anchoring. Drainage can be managed with liners or built-in solutions depending on the application.
